Among many of the wonderful characteristics of the University of Maryland is its outstanding sports program. There are 27 athletic teams for both men and women, and as a single entity they are known by the wonderful nickname of ‘terrapins’ or ‘Terps’ for short. The terps are part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division competition, and their mascot is an anthropomorphized version of the great, indigenous Diamondback terrapin, with the surprising name of Testudo.
